The National Secretary of the Nigerian Hunters Society, Ibrahim Ahmad, has disclosed that the association, since its to establishment over 30 years ago, has recorded significant achievements in community security, despite facing persistent operational challenges.
Speaking to journalists at his office, Ahmad explained that the association was founded by a council of elders and veteran hunters who laid a strong foundation for its activities from inception to date.
He noted that one of the association’s biggest achievements is its collaboration with security agencies, covering vast areas of land, with the aim of improving safety and strengthening security structures within communities.
According to him, this partnership has contributed greatly to the peace and stability currently enjoyed across Zaria and its surrounding settlements.
“Today, Zaria is experiencing improved peace and calm, largely due to the efforts and sacrifices of our members who respond swiftly to security reports, even though we are not on any government payroll. We operate independently, driven by commitment to community service,” he said.
Ahmad further revealed that mobility remains the association’s most pressing challenge, particularly the lack of operational vehicles, which affects their ability to respond even faster to security intelligence.
He also stated that the association has expanded its presence beyond Northern Nigeria to parts of the southern region, including Imo State, as well as Asaba in Delta State, where chapters have been successfully established due to the credibility and integrity of the association’s members.
On internal governance, he confirmed that the tenure of the current leadership has officially ended, while commending members for their loyalty, discipline, and strict adherence to law and order, which has kept the association active for more than three decades.
Ahmad disclosed that members’ identity cards are renewed every 2 to 3 years, and that new registrations are only conducted through verification channels involving traditional rulers and local chiefs, to prevent infiltration by criminal elements.
He added that a new ID card renewal exercise will begin in early 2026, urging all legitimate members to comply, as the previous cards have expired.
“We must be careful about who we register, because of the increasing number of impostors trying to infiltrate the association. Security verification is compulsory before anyone is accepted,” he emphasized.
Similarly, one of the Elders of the Association, Abdullahi Mai Gari, provided further clarification on the operational limitations of the association, especially the lack of government support at local, state, or federal level.
“From the Local Government to the State and even the Federal Government, there has been no financial or logistical support. Yet, whenever our members are called upon, they respond at any time to secure lives and property,” he stated.
Ahmad also recognized the founding chairman, Alhaji Musa, one of the pioneer leaders who helped establish the association, saying the initiative was born out of the need to create a credible, professional, and well-verified hunters network that complements formal security institutions.
He concluded by calling on the government to support the association with greater attention, noting that they possess all the required administrative structures and security compliance systems from local to national level, and that their service is driven by sacrifice for community peace and security.
He added that the association regularly provides advisory support to security agencies whenever guidance is needed to improve community protection.
Alhaji Musa Maaji, the first national chairman of the association and one of its founding members, said the group was established to address the realities of life, ensure the credibility of hunters, and also verify and screen them effectively.
He explained that they often go out at night to confront criminals and assist security agencies by handing suspects over to them, adding that they have now allowed the younger generation to take over while the youth continue the mission.
He further stated that whenever their advice is needed, they do not hesitate to offer it in order to strengthen and improve community security operations.
