The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Niger State chapter, Comr. Garba Bala Kontagora has said that commercial drivers in the state have been disproportionately affected by insecurity, particularly attacks by bandits.
Comr. Bala Kontagora made the remarks in his year-end statement at the union’s secretariat last Friday, expressing condolences to fellow members who have fallen victim to banditry this year.
He noted that while the state government had initiated road repair projects aimed at improving safety, the activities of bandits, especially in the Niger North region, have brought these projects to a near halt, further endangering drivers.
“Bandits often drive animals onto roads and block passages. Any driver caught in such situations becomes a hostage, with gunfire used to coerce drivers and passengers to move the animals. Even security forces find it difficult to intervene because of the risk to human lives,” he explained.
Comr. Bala Kontagora highlighted that, unlike previous years when the union could showcase its achievements, the ongoing insecurity has stalled progress. While many accidents have occurred—some resulting in deaths and vehicle destruction—official statistics remain unavailable due to poor road conditions and the pervasive activities of bandits, compounded by closures along critical routes connecting Niger State to other northern and southern states.
He urged the state government and security agencies to intensify efforts to curb banditry, including the closure of vulnerable border crossings that allow bandits easy access into Niger North (Zone C). He also praised the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, for advocating the closure of these crossings and expressing clear concern for public safety.
Comr. Bala Kontagora advised drivers and union members to remain vigilant and professional, emphasizing the importance of respecting passengers and adhering to driving regulations. He reiterated that the union will continue to train secretaries at various levels to ensure a safer, cleaner, and more responsible transport profession.
"As always, we remain loyal and committed to advising the government to ensure success in the driving profession, particularly regarding safety and regulatory compliance," he concluded.
