A walima and award presentation ceremony was held in honour of political appointees, with special recognition given to the Secretary of Zaria Local Government Council, Hon. Shuaibu Abdullahi Mai Kanta.
The event took place at the Zaria Local Government Secretariat in Zaria.
Speaking at the occasion, Hajiya Asma’u Minkaila Salisu, Chairperson of the Uwar Al’umma Charity and Awareness Forum, said the event was organised to express joy and appreciation to the Secretary for his efforts in creating opportunities for youths.
She noted that his initiatives have helped reduce the burden on government and represent a historic contribution to community development.
She explained that the foundation focuses on four major areas: combating illiteracy, sensitising parents—especially women—on social issues, supporting women and children, and assisting orphans.
She added that many orphans who dropped out of school due to lack of parental support have benefited from the foundation, which sponsored their return to school, provided uniforms, and met other basic educational needs.
According to her, the foundation is self-sustaining, with members jointly supporting and funding its activities.
She called on well-meaning individuals to contribute towards sustaining the charitable work.
Also speaking, the Deputy Chairman of the foundation, Muhammad Musa Ardo, said the event was organised to thank God for the opportunity to serve humanity and to appreciate those benefiting from the foundation’s interventions.
He added that an award was also presented to the “father of the journey,” the Secretary of Zaria Local Government.
He disclosed that the foundation has lined up several projects for 2025, including returning indigent children to school. Other planned initiatives include skills acquisition programmes for people with special needs, support for vulnerable groups, literacy campaigns, and rehabilitation and counselling programmes for inmates and those recently released from correctional centres.
He also announced plans for a Ramadan Feeding Programme this year and appealed to politicians, businesspeople, farmers, and other stakeholders in Zaria Local Government to support the initiative in assisting the less privileged.
In his remarks, Hon. Shuaibu Abdullahi Mai Kanta, Secretary of Zaria Local Government, expressed appreciation for the honour bestowed on him.
He noted that government alone cannot meet all societal needs, stressing the importance of charitable organisations and wealthy individuals partnering to support the less privileged.
He added that such foundations are closer to the people and better positioned to identify the sick, the needy, and the vulnerable.
He cited an example of a philanthropist who pledged nearly ₦10 million to build a hall for the foundation after being inspired by its activities.
He encouraged members of the foundation to continue their work sincerely for the sake of God, assuring them that such efforts would be rewarded in the future.
Representing the Chairman of Zaria Local Government, Engineer Jamil Ahmad Muhammad, the Press Secretary Ishaq Galadima commended the foundation and the Secretary for their commitment to community development.
He said the local government remains dedicated to improving the welfare of the people, in line with the development agenda of the Kaduna State Government and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen.
The foundation also presented awards to other individuals in recognition of their contributions to community development, including the Chairman of Zaria Local Government, Barrister Aisha Muhammad, and Hon. Ismail Yesko among others.
