A prominent citizen, Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to abolish the office of Minister of State for Defence and remove Bello Matawalle from the position, citing concerns over national security and the ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.
In a letter addressed to the President, Shinkafi expressed deep concern over the recent surge in terror attacks, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and questioned Matawalle’s capacity to effectively coordinate the Ministry of Defence.
The appointment of General Christopher Musa as Minister of Defence was widely welcomed by Nigerians, who view him as a seasoned and experienced leader capable of addressing the country’s security challenges.
However, Shinkafi argued that Matawalle’s continued tenure as Minister of State for Defence undermines the Ministry’s effectiveness in combating terrorism. He cited allegations of corruption, mismanagement, and a lack of leadership acumen against Matawalle, which have fueled doubts about his fitness for the role.
The letter also highlighted structural issues within the Ministry of Defence, noting that the senior minister currently lacks control over key areas such as the maritime domain, the Pension Board, and the Defence Industries Corporation.
Shinkafi urged President Tinubu to unify the Ministry under a single command to eliminate personality clashes and improve efficiency.
He concluded by calling on the President to heed the appeal to scrap the office of Minister of State for Defence and dismiss Bello Matawalle, emphasizing the urgent need for effective leadership and coordination to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.
