The Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has sought a partnership with the lawmaker representing Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency, Alhaji Abdulmalik Zubairu, to train Mass Communication students on identifying and combating fake news.
The Council Chairman, Ibrahim Maizare, made the appeal on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Adamu Muhammed, in Gusau.
Maizare expressed concern over the increasing number of young social media handlers and the growing spread of misinformation across online platforms. According to him, the proliferation of fake news has become a serious challenge, making it imperative for the NUJ and other stakeholders to develop mechanisms to curb false information.
He noted that given the prevailing security challenges in Zamfara, students of Mass Communication must be adequately equipped with media literacy skills and practical journalism knowledge to contribute effectively to peacebuilding efforts in the state.
Maizare added that the students also need exposure to the career opportunities available in journalism to promote self-reliance and support broader economic development.
“On this basis, the Zamfara Council of the NUJ considers it necessary to contribute its quota towards building a peaceful society by empowering upcoming journalists with the skills to identify and combat fake news, as well as digital gender-based violence,” he said.
Responding, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Adamu Muhammed, commended the NUJ for the initiative, saying it aligns with the vision of Hon. Abdulmalik Zubairu for an informed and empowered society.
He stated that the lawmaker is passionate about education and therefore would give the NUJ’s request due consideration.
